"I'm far from an OB/GYN, but everything looks good to me," Lindsay Rutherford told Soraya with a smile. "Just take your vitamins and make sure you get all the nutrition you need. And please, for the love of all that is holy, don't overdo it as we both know you tend to do. Get some rest," the blonde advised. Lindsay was your average-height blonde with a quick smile and an even faster temper. If anyone in the colony could put Soraya's over-protective yet authoritative ways to shame, it was the nurse-practitioner who had taken on the role of head medical personnel for the colonists. It wasn't as though there was an abundance of medically-savvy people around, and though there was a small, barebones team of "medics," composed mainly of EMTs and CPR instructors, Lindsay was the one with the most extensive knowledge of how to do long-term care for patients, and as such she had assumed the role of head "doctor."

The examination had been brief, though there was little to see yet, Soraya knew, without having any of the sophisticated blood tests or other machines available to them. This was mostly to alert Lindsay to her current "situation," and to begin the prenatal care she would require.

"Oh, no need to worry," the redhead responded, sitting up on the table. "I am getting plenty of rest already. I do not believe I have ever felt quite so fatigued in my previous pregnancies. Or ill, for that matter," she said, though given her green complexion, it hardly needed to be said. "I fell asleep yesterday in the early afternoon and managed to sleep straight through dinner. I did get up for a light snack, then went right back to sleep," she sighed.

Lindsay regarded her contemplatively a few moments. "If it doesn't get any better, make sure you come see me. We don't want you getting dehydrated or not eating enough because you're sleeping too much or throwing it all back up," she said sternly. "And make sure you /do/ eat."

"I will make sure to eat," she promised, omitting the fact that most of what she would likely be eating the next few months would be made to order to squelch her often unusual cravings. Last night's had been beans and strawberry yogurt.

"Great!" the nurse cheered, "then I suppose if you don't have any questions, you're all set for now. I think you might want to come back in a couple of weeks, just to check on your progress, unless something happens before then."

Biting the inside of her cheek Soraya nodded. "Just one question. Do you have any idea when we should expect our new little one?" she asked. She had tried to count back, but she had never been able to quite figure it out.

"Are you saying you can't pinpoint when it happened?" Lindsay asked, full of teasing.

Her response was a bright-red expecting mother who merely shook her head and quietly answered, "There are... several possibilities." Suddenly, Soraya was very busy inspecting her wedding and engagement rings.

Linsday merely laughed in answer. "Well, I know many women around here, including myself, who would be very jealous to hear that. The pickings are a little slim, if you know what I mean. All the good ones are taken." She winked broadly at Soraya before pulling a makeshift calendar over. "I'd say you're about six weeks along. So... count another 34 weeks?"

The two women spent a few moments counting out the suspected dates before Lindsay left Soraya to change back into her clothes. In a few moments more, the redhead left their infirmary area as surreptitiously as possible, hoping no one would see her as she did so, though she hardly slowed her pace as she walked, either. She had too much to do today to dally, and she was already behind schedule.

She wanted to check in with KC regarding the evening's plans.

Naitachel sighs and uses a slender hand to brush long hair out of his eyes, stopping to make yet another attempt at getting his bearings. Bad enough he had trouble with this when he had landmarks to help steer him, but down below like this, where one corridor and hall resembles another like the branches of a garden-maze, well... he keeps getting hopelessly lost! And he could hear Radu's amusement in the back of his head.

<You do realize that, at this rate, you shall sleep alone tonight?> he answers back wryly, teasing the vampire. After all, they're both used to the Seraph's lack of direction by now, and Naitachel's not really concerned, as he knows Radu is certain to step in should this become frustrating or tiring... or danger threaten again. <At least I amuse you...> he chuckles.

Now, he had made a left at the last intersection, but then he was supposed to go through double doors, right? But there aren't such here. So, that means this is the wrong corridor, and time to turn around and backtrack yet again... and hope he can even backtrack well enough to find anything familiar to start again with.

<Brianna, my dear... You did say they invented something to aid in this...? I think you called it "GPS"? Surely I believe that may be useful about now... But I will settle for simply a long enough ball of twine. It worked for Theseus...>

<I shall not leave you lost,> Radu answers, the amusement obvious in his tone. <I despise sleeping alone.> More seriously, he adds, <Remain still a moment. I shall join you there.>

Naitachel sighs, and gives up finally, setting his back against the wall of the current tunnel he is in. Well, he is hopelessly lost, so whyever not? The current tunnel is narrower than any he recalls... and is it headed downward? So difficult to tell...

<Very well,> the Seraph surrenders. <I suppose I could use a rescue. Or just a respite before I make myself dizzy.>

KC had almost shooed Soraya out the door, confirming for her that all was well in-hand and under way for the evening's festivities, leaving the redhead with more free time than she had anticipated. That left her with the opportunity to do something more pleasant.

<Vlad?> Soraya called, seeking out her husband. She hadn't told him she was planning on going to see Lindsay this morning, though it would be only fair to tell him now of what she had told the redhead. <May I join you?> she asked, unsure of where she could find him.

Within moments Radu is there, taking his hand. Noting the unadorned wrist of his mate, he sighs, realizing his oversight. "It might help to have you outfitted with your bracelet before you wander too much longer. They make it known to others you belong here, but also help us to track you should you become lost."

***

Vlad smiled at Soraya's contact. <Of course, my love. Or would you prefer I come to you?>

Naitachel nods, sighing, and gives the hand in his a squeeze. "Soraya told me they are useful adornments. But to track me? Surely you do that well enough yourself?"

<I shall wait here for you, then> she smiled inwardly settling herself in a quieter corner of the vacated library, knowing he would only be but momentary in appearing. She closed her eyes and leaned her head back, fighting off the nausea yet again, unwilling to let it dampen her good spirits and sunny outlook for the day to come.

He found her there with her eyes closed, and kissed her gently upon the forehead before sitting across from her. "You look tired," he says, a hint of worry in his voice.

Blue eyes opened and a smile greeted Vlad's appearance. "That was fast," she said, lifting her head and taking his hands. "You know that pregnancy always tires me out," she said, "though I admit that this time I am even more fatigued than the other times," she acknowledged. "And even more nauseous, if that can be believed."

She intertwined her fingers with his, her smile still playing across her visage. "I went to see Lindsay this morning. I thought it might be good to let her know about our expecting," she said, hoping he wouldn't be offended by her going for an examination without him. "I would have waited for you, but I was unsure how long you would remain on watch."

"What did she say?" Vlad asked, his interest piqued. "Did she have any suggestions for the nausea or fatigue? Could she tell us anything yet about the baby?"

Gods, but he missed true medical facilities at times like these. How amusing when one considers where he started, but he can't help but think such strides were made for a purpose. If only humanity hadn't failed so completely...

He swallowed that thought, knowing how wrong it was to blame all of humanity for the actions of a few, but when those actions affect his family, he can't seem to help himself, even now.

"She did not say all that much," Soraya answered, looking Vlad in the eye. "I do feel a bit foolish calling you away with so little news, but I simply preferred telling you this face-to-face."

Soraya ran her fingers on Vlad's cheeks, marveling at how much she still loved him after all this time. "She says that I am around six weeks along. That means only 34 weeks of mood swings and cravings for you to deal with," she informed him with a grin. "Otherwise, she says everything looks fine, so far as she can tell," she continued, reluctantly taking her hand away from his face.

"As for the nausea and fatigue, well," the redhead shrugged, "there is not much she could say, other than to make sure I get plenty of rest and ensure sure that I get the nutrition I -we- require. I assured her I would, though I cannot guarantee what form that nutrition will take," she said, smiling again. "Last night's nutrition were beans and strawberry yogurt," she said with a laugh.

She played with one of her loose curls, then, looking at him with a loving smile before sighing. "Well. We already have a boy name chosen. Perhaps we should begin trying to pick out girl names."

Radu escorted Nait toward Eric, the keeper of the access bracelets.

"We'll make sure you're coded for complete access," Radu assured Nait. "Then, no matter where I am, you'll be able to join me without needing for me to come for you. I shall be able to simply guide you there and you shall have access on your own."

He frowned as they came across Nari, standing teary-eyed in their path.

"What is it child?" he asks quietly, not wanting to startle her. "Why are you upset?"

Soraya laughed, shaking her head. "Don't you mean, 'Vladette?'" she responded with humor before wrinkling her nose at him. "I have just conceded Vlad for a boy, after all this time. Do not push your luck, lest I change my mind again," she said, planting a quick kiss on his lips. She hated to admit that denying him his namesake each of the previous times /had/ made her feel rather guilty and selfish. She hoped this would make him happy, for his smile warmed her heart.

"I suppose we have time to think on it," she said with a shrug, before her eyes darted up and to the side in thought. "Alice?" she suggested.

"Vladette...hmm. Okay, no. I guess not." Vlad laughed. At the suggestion of Alice, he literally cringed. "No, definitely not."

Naitachel nods, thoughtful, as he and Radu walk. "That sounds easy enough. I did not realize how important these bracelets are," he muses. "And I imagine you have to go all over, on your patrols. I do wish my sense of direction was up to the task of assisting on those..."

But the Seraph knows better than to offer to be on the front lines with him so soon. He's rather certain Radu would be against the idea, and he knows he himself is not ready, having no knowledge of how weapons work these days and what may be faced there...

Then they come up a tear-stained Nari. He can feel the upset, exhaustion, humiliation, and frustration radiating off her, and reaches a hand out to lightly touch her arm--instinctively hoping to soothe her. "What is wrong?" he asks, concerned. "Has someone hurt you?"

A smile graced Radu's lips as he nodded, laying a hand upon her shoulder. "Come, child. We are on our way to Eric now to get Naitachel his bracelet. If you will join us, I'll see to it you are taken care of as well. And don't worry about Melanie. She doesn't mean to be harsh. She just worries for the well being of her crew. Think of her as a very stern aunt."

"Not Alice, then," Soraya chuckled, having seldom experienced such a strong reaction from her husband when she'd suggested names. Mischief lit her eyes, then, though she took on a mock serious expression. "Well, then I think I will give you the choice between Bertha, Gertrude, or Tellulah," the redhead offered. "Unless you have any better ideas," she said, unable to completely keep the smile from her face.

Naitachel pats Nari's arm consolingly, trying to press some of his soothing influence on to her. He doesn't dare flash his power with Radu so near, lest the warmth harm him. "Well, as Radu said, we are headed the same way. No harm, then... Good fortune that we have come across you thus, no? Come," he offers, tucking the girl's hand under his arm, and flashing a smile across her at Radu, standing at her other side, "we may brave this 'Eric' together, though it sounds he is less formidable than the hearth-dragon you have faced."

<Perhaps we might ask Melanie to let her have a few hours to rest? If she is struggling to do her work right now, it is just as well that she go sleep rather than harm herself or cause accidents in this state,> he offers Radu, uncertain because he does not know much about Melanie.
