Rae watches carefully, mimicking his fingers as he indicates his name even as he erases part of it. Somehow, it clicks. Those finger shapes are letters. Together they form the name. "Tuvon." She smiles as he offers her a "nickname". Tu. She could remember that.

She laughs silently at the next message, accepting the board and chalk back.

"Hi" she writes back. Then, needing to know, she writes the one word she most desperately needs to understand after last night. "Why?"

the question was far more complex than one word would seem, she supposed, but she needed to know...she needed to believe she'd finally met that one person she could trust. She needed to believe she was no longer alone. But what was in this for him? Why would he choose to help her this way?

Tuvon huffs softly, head tilting to one side. To tell the truth, he hadn't bothered to even think--he just reacted. Granted, that was his normal reaction to being threatened, but after... well, he'd usually been the only survivor, really, after.

So he just shrugs.

Taking the chalk in hand, he writes, "No like guns at me." Then, "You can talk?"

Why doesn't she use her voice? He's a bit confused.

She seems to shrink at the question, her eyes downcast all at once. She draws her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them.

The mutant huffs softly again, frowning--a rather menacing look, for him, really, though he doesn't mean it that way. He sets the chalkboard and chalk aside by Raena with a shrug, and turns back to his work.

Up to her what she wants to do now. Tuvon is still debating staying there for any period of time. With raiders and mutants roaming--and whoever was after her, as well as the soldiers sure to look for him--it wouldn't be wise to stay this close, nor to stay long in any particular spot. Move fast and often--that's safer. She can stay or come as she likes.

But... what would he do with her, if she comes with him when he decides to move on?

The mutant muses that idea over as he works on another glass blade.

What on earth will he do with her? Her survival skills don't seem that good, with her in such shape. She might even slow him down. Still, now that he helped her, he can't just toss her aside that easily, or he really would be the monster the scientists claimed they created...

A conundrum.

Well, for the moment, things are well enough as they are. Who knows what may happen?

Rae blanches a little at his reaction. Clearly her lack of speech was enough to put him off.

figures...

She gathered herself, trying to decide what she should do next. When she'd left Townsend, Nebraska she really thought she'd find her brothers easily. She'd thought that somehow she'd just sense them, or they'd sense her. She thought she'd be back with them by now. She didn't think she'd still be alone.

She had always feared being alone.

Yet, they'd remained mind-silent. Those few whose mind she heard or felt too often were intent upon harming her.

Except this one. And he thought he'd be better off without her. Naturally, right?

Her eyes filled with tears, which she wiped away angrily, as she rose and made her way unsteadily across the room. The blisters on her feet and most of her injuries were healed or healing - remarkably fast, yes, but rest and time did that for her kind.

She'd be fine on her own, she told herself. She'd made it this far. And it was temporary after all. Once she found her brothers...

She pushed away the overwhelming despair, wiping her eyes again, as she reached for the door...

The half-made glass knife flies through the air and wedges the door shut firmly, before she can even try opening it.

Standing, Tuvon brushes the glass shards off his lap, sighing, and scooping up the slate again. She's oddly touchy, for a human who isn't afraid of a monster like himself. But she's also not the most practical, leaving behind what supplies he'd practically handed her, and going in a distraught state into danger... without a plan, it seems.

Some strange sense tells him she's looking for someone... without much plan at all...

Well...

He has to admit, he kind of likes her determination. And she's company--something he's really not sure how to handle, but is actually a pleasant thing, somehow.

Well, what's the harm in helping her out?

Scrawling quickly on the board, he hands it to her and turns to sit in the middle of the floor.

The slate says, "You don't have to talk. Want to learn Sign? Useful out there."

(OOC--Tuvon has some telepathy, but he doesn't realize it, as it's always been more just a guide to gut feelings. He can only communicate with telepaths, after all, and he hasn't met many before this--nor does he tend to use more than a primitive version of it, but that's due to not learning how.)

Rae jumped in surprise, spinning to face Tuvon. He'd thrown the knife at her?

she was more surprised by what he'd written. She reread it once...twice...then finally circled the word "sign" and the question mark and handed it back, her expression bewildered. What sign?

Tuvon rubs the slate clean with a sleeve, then scrawls, "Sign Language. Some humans know it."

Well... some. Mostly medical professionals and teachers, he was informed. But it's something. And slates break too easily, so a backup plan is good for if she meets other people.

Cleaning the slate again, he adds, "You're human enough. You can mingle with them. Trade for things you need. Ask questions."

Poking a finger next to his head, he winks a blue eye. A little thinking ahead, planning ahead, could make her search easier... and may mean the difference between failure and success.

The mutant passes the slate back to Raena, his tail-tip flicking, curiosity perked.

Raena nods, but begins writing.

"Ok. But trusting me only lasts until I get scared or angry. Then they know."

she looks embarrassed as she adds,

"I don't know how to mingle. I've never been around anyone but family before the mutants came."

Tuvon arches a brow at that.

She really has no idea how to handle people? She really must have been living under a rock. Hopefully, this Raena learns fast, on a curve. Otherwise, even he won't be able to save her.

Humans still control the world, after all, and they're a rather merciless bunch, in his opinion. Proof was all around them. The ruins and lack of seasons, rain, grass, or birds should be enough...

A huff, and he wipes the board clean. "Crash course soon, then. Need to know how humans interact, to survive. Much bluff and pretense avoids trouble. You pass as human. I am not."

His tail slaps against the floor thoughtfully, then he grins toothily, eyes crinkling at the corners.

She may not be as amused by this idea, but it has merit... and he knows it holds a surprising amount of truth, in ways... if he can but raid a bookstore.

Tuvon always did find such books amusing...

Rae shrugs at his assertion "Human enough" she thinks, having seen siblings born less human than he....of course, they rarely survived long. "but didn't argue."

Her eyes narrowed at Tuvon's sudden smile, suddenly nervous. What was he thinking? Drawing a large question mark, she hands the slate back, her expression all but demanding an answer.

Bounding on all fours over to his pack, Tuvon rummages around for a moment, then fishes out a thick paperback novel with a pink spine and title... and brings it over to Raena with a broad grin.

A Romance novel.

"Has human relationships--overblown, but explained. Otherwise, funny," he writes on the slate, purring a laugh.

Raena's eyes widened. She shook her head.

"I'm not allowed," she wrote quickly. Her mother had always forbade reading such things, insisting they were indecent.

Still, she leaned forward, looking at the picture on the cover. The man had long hair and a broad muscular chest, revealed plainly through his half open pirate shirt. The woman looked feverish, her head thrown back, her dressing gown falling from her shoulders. Only his strong arm kept her to her feet, it seemed.

her brow furrowed. She looked at Tuvon.

"Can I?" she wrote, reaching out uncertainly for the book.

"Plot is false. Touch and words-result exaggerated. Much mating in these. But much human interaction involves mating, wanting something, protecting something." he writes back.

Tuvon looks firmly at Raena, wanting to emphasize to her not to take such books literally, or as a mental script to human interaction, but as merely something to teach the ebb and flow of verbal and tactile cues in human interactions. They very much exaggerate things after all, from what he'd witnessed in the labs.

"Still funny, tho." he adds, before handing he book to Raena, with a toothy smile and shrug. Let her form her own opinion.

Depending on what she thinks of them, he'll have to raid the nearest library or bookstore for more sources to teach her to socialize with people. If she doesn't like them, maybe mysteries would help...

Rae took the book and sat, beginning to read immediately. Her expression was open and easily read as she tore through the pages until finally, she seemed as if she would gag and set the book aside, looking at Tuvon, her brows furrowed. Moving quickly to the slate, she wrote quickly, then turned it for him to see:

"He put those grapes WHERE?!"

The mutant purrs a laugh, but it soon becomes more a hooting laugh instead. He shakes with amusement as he takes the chalkboard again.

"Funny, see? Unrealistic! Absurd mating practices!" he writes, still chortling. Wiping it clean, he adds, "Maybe get mysteries next time. Much death, but much consideration of psychology and motive."

But from his toothy smile, he thinks Romance novels are the funniest things ever written. He knows enough on mating habits, from observation of his handlers to his official education's attempts to consider the details of how his inhuman features effect that (which was amusing, too, being strictly in scientific terms, though that made the scientist educating him so very uncomfortable talking about it to a "beast"). To read what these authors came up with... really boggles the imagination at times.

Rae nodded quickly in agreement, leaving the romance where she'd placed it. In truth, she'd likely have agreed to anything that might replace the mental image THAT one had left behind.

What kind of woman let's a man put grapes THERE? What kind of man wants to? And then he...UGH...

she'd never look at grapes the same way again.

Tuvon chortles still, and shrugs, tucking the novel back into his pack. It might not be to her taste, but he still can get a good laugh from it later.

Taking up the slate again, he gestures at the child's backpack and supplies by her "bed". "Your supplies. Pack quiet, light. May not want to return here later. We go find books for you... soon. First, some signs to know."

Then he erases it, and writes up some vital signals, hand-signing them to her.

"Danger."
"Human."
"Mutant."
"Food."
"Water."
"Hold."
"Drop."

And watches to see how well she learns them. He's not sure they'll be back here, not if they find danger coming too close to this hiding place while they're looking around outside for books. So they need to take what vital things they can. Food. Weaponry. Water. Bedding, but they may have to drop that to run. The chalkboard has to come, though.

Rae looks stunned to find anything referred to as "hers" again. She nods, however, to show her understanding. Then he starts writing again, presenting her with a list of words. He moves his hands, his fingers, showing her his strange silent language. She picks it up surprisingly fast, soaking it all in like a sponge. After repeating each word several times on her hands, she nods again and begins packing her things, smiling softly at her change in circumstance.

Tuvon nods his approval, then turns to his own things, making sure the canned cat food is wrapped to stay silent, tucking his homemade knives into the chest-band for easy grabbing and throwing. His two blankets are folded and rolled up and tied to the bottom of his pack. He slings it back on his back, then gestures at the gun taken from Raena's attackers.

"Can you use?" he writes, curious. If she can use it, best she take it. He doesn't like the feel for them in his hands, as it irritates his claws, nor their noise when he prefers stealth. But if she can't use it, he'll take it along anyway. Might be useful later.

Rae nods, picking up the gun and checking the ammunition. Her father, always confident the government would come in and take them away from their home and family at any moment, had insisted they all learn to shoot. She does as he does, wrapping the cans of food so that they remain silent and rolling her bedding, tying it to the bottom of her small pack. When at last everything's ready, she turns to Tuvon expectantly, her expression clearly asking What next?

The mutant flashes his sharp canines in a toothy smile, and tucks the chalkboard into the back-guard of his backpack, against his spine. Then he crooks a hand at her, and, grabbing his pole, heads for the door. There, Tuvon yanks his glass knife from the crack, secreting it away into a shin-guard's padding, and opens the door, leading them out...

Swinging pole into the straps of his backpack, Tuvon leads the way towards the elevator shaft on all fours, knuckling along like an ape, all leap and bound over old ruined furniture and collapsed walls. Now and then, he stops to look back at her, and watch her progress, making sure she can keep up.

Raena's about to find out how they got up here, to the tenth floor.

Raena follows along easily enough ...after shifting. Realizing quickly that there was no way she could keep up with Tuvon's rapid exit normally, she shifts into the large and powerful ebony wolf. In that form, she kept up with his pace more easily.

Tuvon leads the way up to the shaft of the elevator, then peers down it, eying the broken cables hanging from above. The elevator has long since smashed to the bottom.

With a toothy smile, the mutant turns to Raena, and gestures for her to come closer.

*Hold* he hand-signs, gesturing to the pack on his back. He wants her to grab hold of his backpack--likely for a ride down.

After all, he carried her up.

Raena hesitates for only a moment, before nodding, shifting back to human form, and grabbing hold.

No point in not trusting him now, she reminds herself as she takes a deep breath and holds on tight.
